My first name is Johnson. I am twenty-something. When I was 15, I bought a digital video camera, wrote a 100 page sci-fi screenplay called The Blackest Dawn, and began selling “pre-order vouchers,” home-printed pamphlets containing “artsy” photos of my friends and me and a brief spiel about our sci-fi epic. I was learning to be a filmmaker. I was learning that filmmaking requires endless ambition, endurance, and utter shamelessness. That the film was never made is unimportant; in the few steps I had taken, I had found my first love: film.
Since then, I have consumed cinema literature with a voracious appetite. Through blood, sweat, and tears, I have spawned several short films, all of which I look back on with equal parts disappointment and satisfaction. I yearn to create more.
I’m entering my last semester of college, eighteen hours away from a degree in Computer Science. After that, ahoy Golden State! Soon I will return to what I love most, filmmaking, but for now, I will pour out my pent-up affections into this blog in a barrage of reviews, newsflashes, predictions, anecdotes, profiles, book recommendations, how-tos, opinions, videos, links and more.
I know little in the grand scheme of things, but what I know about film I will share, and what I don’t, I will learn and pass on. My primary aim is for an audience of twenty-something film enthusiasts, film students, and filmmakers, but I believe anyone, regardless of age, will find my content accessible, entertaining, and thought-provoking. I covet your comments and community. I’m looking forward to this journey.
All the best,
Johnson
